Marina on the Monterey Bay

 Located on the beautiful Monterey Bay, six miles north of Monterey on California Highway 1. Marina is 108 miles south of San Francisco, 355 miles north of Los Angeles.

Marina enjoys a Mediterranean climate with average temperatures of between 50º and 70º. There are two harbors and three airports within 10 miles of Marina, including the newly acquired Marina Municipal Airport (formally Fritsche Field). The city known as "Marina" was established in 1918 and incorporated in November of 1975.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census; the population of Marina was 25,101. Marina prides itself on having the seventh most ethnically diverse population of its size in the USA. According to the Associaton of Monterey Bay Area Governments, the median household income is $43,000. Real estate experts give the median home price as $682,000.

Neighboring CSUMB employs 660, Monterey Peninsula Engineering is the largest private employer, with Albertson's Grocery the second largest job provider. Home to at least 15 churches, with most denominations represented, Marina has four major shopping centers and five banks. Marina has a small library and is currently engaged in a capital campaign to build a new, modern facility. Marina belongs to the Monterey Unified School District and is home to California State University of Monterey Bay, 100 Campus Center as well as Golden Gate University, 500 8th Street, located on the former Ft. Ord.

The beautiful Marina Dunes Resort, a welcome addition to the city, is located on the beach of the Pacific Ocean. The new Ramada Inn adds another option to the list of fine accommodations. The Marina Dunes RV Park, winner of the "Best in the West" award by the industry, provides a welcome respite right on the beach for touring RVers. The future will bring development of many more hotel rooms; these projects will generate new jobs and substantially increase the transient occupancy tax revenue.

The University of California Monterey Bay Education, Science & Technology is developing a small business incubator facility at the airport business park. When built out, the UC MBEST project will generate in excess of 25,000 sq. ft. of new office space. The result will be the creation of 300 new jobs by the center and the Airport Business Park. Monterey Peninsula College is developing a presence in Marina. The future of our community is bright and promising with the potential for extensive growth and development.
